Kryzta released by cactus, took 3 hours

cactus has long been established as a complete beast of a developer. The indie developer has developed complete games in the time it takes the normal person to finish Super Mario Bros, as has done it yet again. Working on a competition where the goal is to create a functional game in 3 hours, cactus has make a quirky little arena shooter with unique mechanics called Kryzta.

Your goal is to kill other ships by luring enemies into shooting their buddies. Once an enemy dies, you can collect his little chunks for points. After a while, you can utilize a special shot as well. It's very simple, like most of his games, but very fun and easy to pick up. Pick up the download off of the competition thread!

Watch careful analysis of the Mirror's Edge trailer

DICE and EA's Mirror's Edge trailer debuted a week ago, and wowed the gaming community with its immersive first-person perspective, interesting visual style, and Assassin's Creed-esque free-running, city-scaling gameplay. During your first viewing, you'll probably come to believe the game has the makings of a cult hit, and maybe more.

But there are a lot of things you might not notice on your first viewing. That's why GameTrailers put together an excellent HD analysis video. It's packed with observations of hints about the gameplay, the graphics engine, and the setting, and it's all brilliantly edited to match the game's ultra-classy visual je ne sais quoi.

Did you notice the dynamic depth of field effects? How about the police cars circling the buildings Faith is scaling? Or her shoes' obscure Indonesian brand? All that in more in the video.

Lost Planet Colonies goes gold, coming May 27

For those antsy to enter a barren winter wasteland, where the people hunt the eggs of giant homicidal insectoid alien things, you're in luck. Capcom has announced today that their bug-hunting epic, Lost Planet Colonies, has finally gone gold, and will be available to all who wish to partake in its wintry splendor in two weeks. So grab your thermos, gun, and overcoat (which Frank seems to be missing) and prepare for some awesome bug-killing action.

Danny Glover backs new game with Arab action hero

Lethal Weapon co-star and all-around-revered-actor Danny Glover has joined the board of directors at Colourblind Entertainment, a United Arab Emirates-based studio developing video games for several world regions. The company is working on a game called Sharq Warriors.

Sharq Warriors' protagonist is an Arab man named Sami, who will fight to save his country and his sister. "Many existing games feature Western soldiers shooting Arabs, Afghans and other ethnic 'enemies'," said fellow board member Riz Khan. "We're introducing different types of heroes and 'Sami' is the first of them but he fights corruption, not people of another race."

This is an admirable endeavor, and we're looking forward to seeing how it turns out. The game is primarily intended for the Middle-eastern market but a demo is on its way to the internet. Glover also heads up the activist film studio Louverture Films, which will be working with Colourblind to expand the Sami franchise into other media.

Microsoft: No Alan Wake release date yet

In 2005 Remedy, the original developers of the first two Max Payne games, officially revealed and showed a live in-game demo for their next project Alan Wake. The title, which was described as a thriller type of title in the vein of The X-Files and Twin Peaks, then went into stealth mode. At E3 2006, Microsoft announced they would publish Alan Wake for both the PC and Xbox 360 and showed off a little more gameplay footage. Since then there has been little to no info on Alan Wake from either Remedy or Microsoft making the game even more mysterious.

We were hoping for some more info from Microsoft this week as they were holding a big Xbox 360 press event with a number of titles revealed to the media but alas Alan Wake was not among the games shown nor given a release date. Blog site Venture Beat chatted with Microsoft Games Studios head Shane Kim and asked him flat out, "Is Alan Wake scheduled for 2008?" Kim's reply was disappointing: "We haven't announced a firm date for Alan Wake . . " adding that they would announce such a date when they are ready to do so. So we are still in a holding pattern for the game...perhaps Microsoft will reveal more at E3 in July.

Assassin's Creed DirectX10.1 removal patch released

Ubisoft's decision to remove the DirectX10.1 effects from the PC port of Assassin's Creed has generated a ton of controversy and now the patch has finally gone live. The 1.02 patch is now available to download from us and deals with a number of issues that have cropped up since the release of the game about a month ago. Ubisoft states the patch has "fixed broken post-effects on DirectX 10.1 enabled cards" but that's only kind of true; as we have reported the publisher has removed the DirectX10.1 support entirely.

The full details on the 1.02 patch are after the jump

What might have been: Frictional Games releases Unbirth

It's rare that we get to see how a game evolves from its beginnings to its final project. Developer Frictional Games is doing just that with its release of an alpha version of Unbirth, a horror themed first person action-adventure game that served as the first step in releasing the first game in their acclaimed Penumbra series.

The game, which was created by Frictional Games founder Thomas Grip a number of years ago, was never finished but because of popular demand by fans, he decided to release a playable (but still unstable) alpha version of Unbirth which should give Penumbra fans an interesting insight into the series. The web site also has some more info on the history of the game's development along with monster sketches, level screenshots and design docs and more. Anyone interested in game development should check this out.

Frozenbyte teases about new projects

Oh, those crazy Finland cats. We refer, of course, to Frozenbyte, the game developer who so far has released two games in the Shadowgrounds series of top down sci-fi action games. The games may be budget titles but they are a lot of fun and it looks like Frozenbyte is ready give us some more. A lot more.

The company just relaunched its corporate web site and announced that it is planning to release three more original games, one in 2008 and the other two in 2009. That's all the details they are giving at the moment . . . or are they playing with us? The only non-Shadowgrounds image on their web site is of what looks like a giant 1950's retro style robot attacking something unseen with train cars in one of its metal hands. Hmmmm . . . is that a hint about what their next game is about? If so color us interested.

Lost Planet and Bionic Commando comic books coming

It's yet another games-to-comics press announcement today. We already have comics coming up this year based on Dead Planet, Prototype and Brothers In Arms among others. Now Devil's Due Publishing has revealed a new agreement with Capcom to bring a number of Capcom's game properties to the four color publishing world (more details will be revealed this July at the San Diego Comic-Con.

This new agreement will result in four comics based on Capcom games. So far only two have been announced but they are both games that have or will show up on the PC. The sci-fi action game Lost Planet is one of them and the other is the upcoming remake of Bionic Commando. Gee..what's next? A Doom comic? A Half-Life hardcover graphic novel? The possibilities are endless

Velvet Assassin hits PC this fall

Coming this fall from developer Replay Studios and publisher Gamecock Media Group is the stealth-action World War II title, Velvet Assassin. Inspired by real-life British secret agent Violette Szabo, players take on the role of Violette Summer who must infiltrate enemy territory to defeat the growing German war machine.

While Sam Fisher takes a break from action and Solid Snake only sneaks onto consoles, could Violette fill the stealth-action gap gamers have been craving? Promising "lush-visuals" and a unique combat system, we'll have to wait and see.

Get swinging with the PC demo of Lego Indiana Jones

The Lego Star Wars games have been a surprise hit since they first started, first for Eidos who published the first game in the series developed by Traveller's Tales and then by LucasArts who have published all the other Lego Star Wars games since. Now LucasArts and Traveller's Tales are teaming up again to bring another of George Lucas' franchises to the family friendly Lego world with the release of Lego Indiana Jones

The PC demo of the game was just released and features the first section of the full game where you experience a loose adaptation of the opening scene from the debut Indiana Jones film Raiders of the Lost Ark. It also contains a free play mode. The full version of the game, which takes the player through the first three Indiana Jones movies, is due out in early June.

Max Payne fan film "foxed" by Fox

A number of major film studios are flexible when it comes to having their properties adapted by fans for non-profit fan films. Twentieth Century Fox is apparently not one of them. Years ago gamers coined the term "foxed" when the same film studio got the development team that made the exceptional Alien mod for the original Quake to stop development and remove the first public release of the total conversion. Now the very same film studio has decided to shut down the fan-made movie Payne and Redemption, based on Remedy's action game Max Payne.

The reason, of course, is that Fox is making its own theatrical Max Payne movie starring Mark Walhberg as the dark and violent detective (it's due out in October). Apparently having a free fan made Max Payne movie would not do and earlier this month the writer-director of Payne and Redemption, Fergie "Larry David" Gibson, posted up word on his web site that after having a chat with the VP of Fox's Intellectual Property he was forced to close shop.

You can tell that Gibson is extremely bitter about the whole situation; this is something he has been working on for years. He made three trailers for his film (all now pulled of course) and now all his work is for naught. You could argue that Fox has every right to do what it did; they are spending tens of millions to make and market a Max Payne movie and they could be concerned that a fan-made non-profit film could cause confusion. On the other hand you could argue that such a fan film could serve as free publicity for Fox's Max Payne movie. We will never know.
