PvP vs. PvE: Blizzard on World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft's Arena Tournament launched on March 31, 2008, letting players immediately create level 70 characters and equip them with high level skills and epic armor. Competitors from around the world battle for up to $200,000 in cash prizes. At the same time, the Arena Tournament underscores Blizzard's intentions of using WoW's PvP gameplay as a type of eSport. WoW rose to become the most popular MMO in the world primarily because of its PvE content, and using its PvP for eSports marked a sharp turn in the game's focus. We catch up with WoW's Lead Designer, Tom Chilton, Paul Della Bitta (Senior Manager, Global Community and eSports) and Joong Kim (eSports Manager) to get the inside story about balancing PvP and PvE gameplay and what players can expect to from the future of Azeroth.

Yet another Steam and TF2 update

It seems that the much-lauded TF2 Gold Rush update caused as many problems as cool new stuff it introduced. Two new official Valve updates have just been released to address some more issues. The first is a client update that fixes bugs involving launching GoldSRC (Half-life 1) mods as well as network issues and an inability to launch Portal: First Slice. The second is a TF2 update that fixes yet another infinite übercharge exploit, the extremely annoying "reliable snapshot overflow" error, and the inability for user maps to have functioning elevators. This still doesn't damper my enthusiasm for the new content, though!
Two TF2 updates released back-to-back

On a related note, if you haven't, check out the new Gold Rush/Medic update for TF2. It's amazingly well put together, and shows the sort of dedication Valve has to making and updating great games. If only all developers were this generous to their customers.
Take on the Fortress... for free!
In this the year of the Beijing Olympics, Valve is offering gamers a chance to go for the gold. Starting Friday, May 2 and going Sunday the 4th, everyone can play Team Fortress 2 for free! Free is good no matter how you slice, but they're tossing in three brand new features to boot!
Gold Rush is a brand spanking new map complete with a new mode called "Payload." Teams are split on offense (Blu) and defense (Red) just like in Dustbowl, but the object of the Blu team is to literally push a payload full of bombs from one capture point to the next until all three of Red's bases are blown to smithereens.
Over the next year Valve will be rolling out the biggest change to the game. Starting with the Medic class players will be able to earn three unique items by first earning some or all of the new achievements (for Medics there are 36 in all). These items will give players new choices as to how they play the class as well as offering new benefits for the team they're playing on. The other eight classes will be rolled out soon after the initial release.

Mark Rein talks epically about PC gaming
Mark Rein is a man you either love... or love to hate. Never one to mince words, the vice president of Epic Games recently chatted it up with the folks at CVG about Unreal Tournament III for the Xbox 360, Unreal Engine 4, and the future of PC gaming. We'd mention that what he had to say will shock you, but come on... we're talking about Mark Rein here. Nothing he says should shock anyone by now. Personally, we here at Big Download love him for that.
Since we are a PC gaming site we won't much mention the 360 port, but if you're an Xbox player jonesing for unreal fragging -- you'll want to check out the interview for some interesting nuggets o' knowledge. Besides... the good stuff is in his Nostradamus like prediction of PC gaming's future.
